Appendicitis is a condition where the appendix gets inflamed and swollen and causes extreme pain. The infection and inflammation may occur if the opening of the appendix becomes clogged with bacteria and stool. It is characterized by a typical pain in the lower right abdomen region. Some other symptoms along with pain include nausea, constipation, vomiting, low grade fever.
Traditionally, the procedure of appendix removal was performed by giving an incision in the right lower abdominal wall. However, in most of the laparoscopic appendectomies, surgeons operate by giving three small incisions on the abdominal wall.
The placement of incisions is monitored through the medical grade monitor which gives a clear view of the internal organs and magnifies the affected area. Through the incisions, small narrow cannula is inserted that inflates the abdomen with carbon dioxide and gives a clear vision of the area. A laparoscope is then inserted through the incisions and once the appendix is located, it is stitched and removed. The incisions are cleaned, closed and dressing is done. The patient is kept under observation for some time and released. Laparoscopic appendicectomy helps faster healing and is the best option for older and overweight adults.
