Ovarian cysts are a common occurrence in women of the reproductive age as well as those nearing menopause and occurs due to several reasons and predisposing factors. Ovarian cysts are basically fluid filled sacs that develop on the ovaries and are often associated with pelvic and abdominal pain, swelling, irregular painful menstruation, pain during intercourse and other associated complications. Ovarian cysts are usually detected during a pelvic examination done during an ultrasound and the we generally recommend an additional blood test and hormonal check up done to confirm the diagnosis. While most ovarian cysts resolve on own without any treatment but in certain cases, surgery is required and most of the times, laparoscopic cystectomy is performed by the surgeons. In case the cyst is malignant, surgical staging is perfomed.
Following the surgery, two weeks of post surgical care and follow up is done. The specific complications associated with ovarian cyst removal include need for removal of one or both ovaries, injury to the surrounding organs, damage to the fallopian tubes, damage to womb, and infection. Risk of these complications is very minimal with laparoscopy.
